This 5,000+ population town is located on the north shores of Lake Atitlan. Due in part to the fact that it’s not serviced by roads, some excellent hiking is available, but as usual, check local conditions for safety precautions before heading out. A popular hike is to Jaibalito, or for the more ambitious, all the way to Tzununa or San Marcos.
You didn’t read that wrong — the town isn’t serviced by roads — at least not reliably passable ones. That means transportation is by lancha, or water taxi. That also means that it’s a great place to force yourself to relax!
Lake Atitlan’s sole scuba diving shop — ATI Divers — is based here in Santa Cruz.
